Disk Cache

I know hardly ANYTHING about hardware... enough to get by, install an occasional cd drive or disk drive...

I have a Fujitsu 80 gig drive, #HDS 722580VLAT20. When I check my Setup (at boot up) it shows a drive with a 256K cache.

Can this be right? When I looked on Google, I found 2, 4 and 8 meg caches, but nothing that low.

Is that something I set (or should have), or something I just change in the settings, or...?

Regards,
Chuck Billow

Have you checked with Fujitsu or looked at the specs in your manual?

Re: Disk Cache

I think you're seeing the BIOS POST message about your motherboard's L2 cache, and not your disk drives'. It would be highly unusual for a disk to display that level of detailed information at system startup. They are two completely separate things.

Although I've never had a need to find out, if you're really curious there are likely several utilities on the web that will query your computer and report information like that once Windows is loaded.

I've never had the need prior either... except now that I noticed it...

And it seemed especially strange that I saw several different cache sizes for what appeared to be the same drive.

So now I am curious...

Well Chuck, you might not get much back from Fujitsu . According to this page , your drive is not a Fujitsu but rather a Hitachi and it has a 2 MB cache.

John:

Well, I'm a bit...?

'Cause the serial# I got from the setup at bootup, but I had sworn that it was a Fujitsu... but I'm not about to tear the machine apart to look at the drive, and it's from a couple years back, so the records are stored...

Thanks for the help, though.

I'm a little surprised that that info isn't a bit more readily available, but there you go...

Thanks,
Chuck

Also, how the heck did you come up with that page? That was certainly a neat find...

Just to clarify: You (obviously) were correct... it must have been in the "compatible with" that the naming error had "stuck".

Gotta get better at that!

Thanks,

That's because 99% of end users will never care or need to know. My guess? Your curiosity will eventually make you crackers enough to pry open the case... just to have a look. What really matters is the model you choose if you ever have to replace it.

Now is THAT very nice? True? Maybe... well, possibly... well, probably... Actually, I don't recall that the cache info was actually on the drive anyway.

<<

That's why I may (or not)... because how the heck else would I ever learn (or not) and be able to impress myself with my vast accumulation of... Since it's an almost certainty that drives, for example, get replaced, upgraded etc.

Actually, I'm usually just trying to replicate... "Joe's machine seems so much faster... because...? Plus, being an inherent skeptic, I read the ads or see the specs about the "latest and the best", and try to both understand and see if what they say REALLY proves to be the case...

I suppose if I had a bit more money, it wouldn't matter quite as much (to me), but budgetary restraints usually keep my PC upgrades to about one every three years or so, so I TRY to get the most bang... and that is more likely the more I can at least understand of what I see and hear.

Just in this latest jaunt, there are disks with 2 megs of cache, and then those with 8 megs of cash, usually costing more. Make a difference?

Also, since I (often) find myself saying "I shoulda seen / noticed / asked that", and I dislike the "shoulda / woulda syndrome, I try to prevent it by absorbing what I'm exposed to technically.

Doesn't ALWAYS work, but it helps and it's fun.

Regards,
Chuck
