Win 16 subsystem insufficient resources error (XP SP2)

I'm running Windows XP Pro (SP2) and have 1.5G RAM. I have a couple of programs (older type) that I am trying to install. When I click on setup.exe I receive the following message.

The Win 16 subsystem has insufficient resources to continue running... please restart your machine

Have done a google search and there seem to be many instances of this problem - mainly people asking for help but no solutions forthcoming.

I'm hoping there is a patch or software that I can install to work around this.

Does anyone here know why this happens and how I can fix it?

    Cheers and thanks in advance,

Did you try it install them using Program Compatibility Wizard (Start | All Programs | Accessories | Program Compatibility Wizard)?

For DOS-based programs choose "Windows 95" compatibility mode.

    Hi Kaplinb,

Great suggestion will also take a look at this. I did not realise there was a wizard for compatiblity when installing older programs.

    Much obliged,

    ozgal
