    Windows 2000 msi Installer Fails

I have tried many things and sources with no luck. I am going crazy.
Thanks again for at least reading this problem.

I am using Windows 2000 Pro with SP4. I have done everything referenced in
the "Help" document for Error 1719 correction. I have Windows Installer
level 3.01.4000.1823. I checked the properties for msi.dll and msihnd.dll
and they are both at 3.01. I ran in Safe Mode 'msiexec /regserver'. I
checked the register and all addresses contain the correct programs and
paths. I have executed Windows2000-KB908519-x86-ENU.EXE patch.
I ran InstMsiW.exe to re-install and naturally it said it was already
installed. I verified that filetypes .msi related to msiexec.exe. I removed
    my virus protection programs.
I STILL GET THE BLASTED ERROR MESSAGE. " Error 1719. The Windows Installer
Service could not be accessed. You may be running in safe mode or Windows
Installer may not be correctly installed" I am running with full authority,
    although not the Admin userid.

Have you checked the Windows Installer service status & starutp type? Have you followed the re-install instructions in "Error 1719: The Windows Installer service could not be accessed" error message when you try to add or remove a program? This seems to be well known as seen from all the links in error 1719 windows installer - Google Search.

I tried everything in the Error 1719 writeup. I do question how removing the pointer to dllcache only would allow a fix. It did not.
    Thanks

Re: Windows 2000 msi Installer Fails

The dllcache folder is part of windows file protection. If a file that is registered and saved in dllcache is deleted from the system32 folder it is replaced from the dllcache folder. So, in order to replace a dll in system32 the dll in dllcache must be deleted or renamed first.

Re: Windows 2000 msi Installer Fails

I thought I had posted a previous reply to your last post. If I go into the register and remove msi.package and msi.patch and the msiexe.exe and msi.dll's from system32 and dllcach, Can I reinstall using instmsiw.exe? Is that as scary as it seems after I read it? I know there are other places that reference Windows Installer with CLSID'S so there must be a way to start it cleanly.
What about removing msiexec.exe, msi.dll and msihnd.dll from system32 and dllcache and doing an install? As you can tell I am reaching for any solution, except trying to re-install Windows 2000 Pro. Thanks

Re: Windows 2000 msi Installer Fails

I will try again the steps in the Error document. I have the latest Windows Installer, with update, installed. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to know it is installed. The application it is dependent on RPC is started. I just cannot run or start Windows Installer. Are there any other services/applications that must be running? Because the Error Document says to run misexec /regserver, am I supposed to be setup as a server even though I am standalone?

I understand that you have Windows Installer installed. But something is not right. So, I'd follow the directions to re-install just to be sure all the bases are covered.

No, the /regserver option does not mean that you must be running server software or a a server. It is just a name that some developer thought up to identify some functionality. I'd say if the KB document says to do that step then do it.

Re: Windows 2000 msi Installer Fails

I have kept digging and found something about sfc.exe. I followed that and nothing happened. I also found Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows 2000 Pro unless you pay a bundle. Have you run across another application that will handle .msi files? Thanks

No. Just the installer. If you uninstalled and reinstalled according to the directions in those KB articles and it still fails, you ought to consider reloading the system.
