    Disallow installation

Is there a way to disallow installation of an application in Win98? Setup.exe, autorun.inf, install.exe are samples of installation executables that initiate the installation. I would like to be able to restrict this executable from running.

I would also like to be able to turn this restriction on and off in case I find a need to install an application. TIA.

    Turning off the auto-insert notification
    will help a bit.

The autorun.inf will be baffled at least.

That is in control panel: system:
    cd-rom: properties: settings

    Re: Disallow installation

Thank you for the response. I understand that this will not run the installer (if launching from the CD drive) but not totally prevent it from launching. What I am aiming at is to restrict someone from installing an application without permission whether run from the CD Drive, Floppy, hard drive or even network drive. Something like coming up with a customized list of names of executables (setup.exe, install.exe, autorun.inf etc) that connotes installing an application to be prevented from running thus disallowing installation.

I also know that there is a way for INSTALLED applications from running by password protecting the executable associated with that application. What I want is to detect and prevent a list of name executables with .exe, .com. inf extensions to abort launch.

Other suggestions are welcome. Thanks again.

    Re: Disallow installation

I think what you are looking at is having one of the many security programmes installed on the machine. Then you can setup different levels of security - admin (god), user run certain applications, user 2 run other applications etc..

There are many of these on the market and I don't have any preferences as I don't run any of them. I have looked at a few though and I am sure this is what you want. Sorry I can't be any more specific but may be someone else has a recommendation. <img src=/S/thinks.gif border=0 alt=thinks width=15 height=15>

You should look at this site, a "sandbox" is what you
seem to want. I started to install esafe a while ago and
gave up as it is too restrictive for me.

It does allow you to do what you seem to want.
