Every time I attempt to run Windows update IE opens the white screen at the site and the system sits and sits. It eventually hangs the server and we need to reboot. Any suggestions?

Did you try to connect to Windowsupdate website from APPWIZ.CPL > Add new programs > Windows Update?
Also: defragment boot partition and check it for errors (chkdsk /r )
In XP the place to look would be <big>C:WINDOWSWindowsUpdate.log</big>. But it can be quite unintelligible!

There are two logs in %WINNT% folder: Windows Update.log (automatic updates) and WindowsUpdate.log (manual updates). If you are viewing these logs in Notepad, make sure that Word Wrap is unchecked.
