Sal,
I'm not sure just what your question is?
If you mean should you compress your HD files, then I would ask, WHY?
You seem to have plenty of free space available.

If you mean Indexing your drive, I would say, fine but only if you do a LOT of file searching. I don't have indexing enabled because I didn't see any real search speed increase but it did seem to take a performance hit as it did it's indexing.

Bob,

Thanks for replying about the indexing to Sal. I decided to follow your advice about turning off the indexing for "C" (subfolders and files included). Now the computer is busy applying the "attributes" and it is taking a good deal of time! Is this activity normal? Also I have a dialog box that popped up and said "An error occurred applying attributes to the file: C:Recycler|S-1-5-21-1177238915...Dc16.pf. Access denied. And it gave options ignore/Ignore All - Retry - Cancel. So I said "Ignore" and that brought up more. So I said "Ignore All" and muttered "get on with it" And it did! I'm always glad I have a back up on hand if I need it!

Whew....it is finally done! That must have taken a good 10 minutes! What do I do next for some excitement around here!

Skitterbug,
I turned off indexing for all HDs and yes, it did take a few breathless minutes to complete the task.

Sal,
As I said, only if you really need the space and it looks like you don't need to do it.

Re: compress my HD

Hi Bob,

Believe it or not, my is right here on my desk - well away from the electronics of course! And yes, all seems to be well. I deleted the junk in the trash and rebooted my trusty beast. Actually, I was hoping that little exercise would take care of a shutdown problem that I have been troubleshooting since I loaded the SP2 patch so long ago. I have followed through all of the various suggestions, and MS trouble shooting for slow shutdowns, etc. but I've never come up with a solution for it. It isn't a major problem but it usually means a couple of minutes of patience is needed when I have to do a reboot for some reason. If finally does and I get on with life but anytime I see something new, I think - just maybe it's the solution! But this one didn't do it. If it speeds up performance however, it will be well worth turning it off. I don't do much searching so I won't miss it at all. Thanks for the tip!

This rollercoaster weather has caused me to catch a cold. My body doesn't know whether to expect warm or cold outside anymore!

Re: compress my HD

Oh boy, those of us who live in this region... I was sitting with my wife yesterday afternoon and someone said: "Hey, look out the window!" And there it was - SNOW! Thankfully it wasn't heavy and only lasted an hour or so (around here). This morning it's brrrrr cold and raining - a worse combo than snow, in my opinion. I hate 'black ice.'
