    Fingerprint reader database

Does anyone know where the MS fingerprint reader (Digital Persona) database of user names/passwords is stored? I would like to be able to back it up regularly. I'm guessing it's in the registry, and perhaps inaccessible even to users. Or could I back it up by exporting that reg key? I know the fingerprint itself is not encrypted. Are the user name and password data?
    Thanks.

<img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15> Have you consulted the user manual or software of the fingerprint reader? It should give you all that information. If you provide us the make/model you're using, we might be able to help.

    Re: Fingerprint reader database

The "manual" is essentially non-existent. I find nothing in the help file on the issue. I know the passwords registered when you click "remember this password" in XP (I'm not talking about the biometric gadget here) are stored in the registry and are not even accessible to the user. But I have probably between 50 and 60 different passwords registered for the fingerprint reader and have no idea where this data is stored so that I could back it up. Thanks for any clues you can offer.

See if the Protected Storage Passview utility at NirSoft - freeware utilities: password recovery, system utilities, desktop utilities is any help. If the information is saved in protected storage it is no different than any other user/password information. I suspect that this is the case as MS has said that the fingerprint reader is just to keep you from having to type the user/password stuff.

Thanks, joeperez. When I get back to my computer tomorrow I'll try that utility. Do you know if it allows you to back up or save the revealed passwords? I had looked in the reg and found what looked like maybe my encrypted passwords in the Digital Persona key (that's the software used by the reader). If those are my passwords, encrypted, could I just export that key as a backup, to later restore them to the registry?

1.) According to the web site it does allow export/import. 2.) Yes, you could export the registry information and later add back to the registry.
