    Open With' (WinXP SP-2)

What happened to the Open With on the context menus?

is there a way to bring it back?

    Regards,

If the file that you want to open is already associated with a file extension, I am not sure "open with" will appear as an option. You will need hold the shift key down and then right click on the item. This action should make "open with" appear in the menu.

No, I'm using Firefox, and wanted to open a link in Explorer.

Have a look at OpenExpert if you want to expand your Open with... options.

If you are wanting to open a page in IE from within FireFox - have a look at the IE View extension.

    Leif:

Just d/l OpenExpert. I thought, being a prudent fellow, I would splain what I'm trying to do before I dive in:

No, I'm not trying to open items from within Firefox (but, BTW, the IE View works great, as does it's companion Firefox View, allowing quick switching FROM Ie to Firefox).

I have/had a couple of links that "had" to have IE to work right, and they were links, hence, right-click and "Open With".

The link in your prior post had an "Open With" Reg entry, but it didn't seem to take on internet shortcuts. So...

What the heck happened to the "Open With" that used to be available with any type of link? You used to be able to turn it on/off via X-Setup...

    Chuck Billow

    Re: Open With' (WinXP SP-2)

    I'm getting a bit lost!
Are you saying you have (totally) lost your Right-click-Open-with option from Windows Explorer?
Or that you want to expand your options when opening an .htm file?

OpenExpert looks like it should do what you want - you can configure it by adding and removing applications that you want to show up in your list, and even change the order they appear in!

Are you saying you never see 'Open With' on any file?

    Re: Open With' (WinXP SP-2)

Chuck, I'm not sure whether or not this depends on the IE View extension (which you already have), but if I right click on a link within Firefox, I get the option (near the bottom of the context menu) to "Open Link Target in IE".

    Re: Open With' (WinXP SP-2)

    Joe:

No, I'll see the Open With on an actual file right-click (i.e. "html") but NOT on any shortcut to that same file, or url to same.

And in the case of web links, this can be a pain if you need a particular browser, for then you have to open it in the default, and then, if available, switch, instead of just "going there".

    Chuck

You could add an entry to 'Send To' for each browser.

    Re: Open With' (WinXP SP-2)

    Joe:

I had thought of that right off -- seemed so easy. So I added a shortcut ot IE ( the "traditional" shortcut type) to my SendTo folder.

But, for example, http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm is a link on my desktop. Firefox opens it fine. IE opens it fine. But if I right-click it and send it to IE, I get an error "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" etc., etc., etc.

    H-m-m-m.

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Re: Open With' (WinXP SP-2)

I added an IE shortcut to my Send To and am able to select any Internet shortcut anywhere and send it to IE via the send to menu. Can you post the properties of the Send to shortcut and the properties of a shortcut you are trying to send to the IE shortcut?
