    Fixing the Document Map (2000 and up)

    If you've used the Document Map in Word, you've probably noticed its annoying habit of positioning your cursor at the very beginning of the document whenever you open it (the Doc Map, not the file). Here's a simple macro that will open the Doc Map without moving your insertion point (or even unselecting a selection):
    <pre>Dim rTemp As Range
    Sub NewDocMap()
    If ActiveWindow.DocumentMap Then
    ActiveWindow.DocumentMap = False
    Exit Sub
    End If
    Set rTemp = Selection.Range
    ActiveWindow.DocumentMap = True
    rTemp.Select
    End Sub
    </pre>

    This can be very useful for authors, proofreaders, and editors, as well as anyone who uses Heading styles throughout a document.

    I have Word 2002 SP-3, and when I activate the document map, the insertion point (or selection) stays right where it is...

    I have Word 2003 SP2, and I also don't see this problem.

    And now I'm on a PC with Word 2000, and the problem doesn't occur there either...

    It may depend on the view you're using before you open the document map. In Normal view it does move the insertion point to the start of the document, but in Print Layout view it doesn't. I'm using Word 2002 SP3.

    My Word 2003 SP2 does that too.

    I frequently use the document map, and I do usually work in print layout view, but I sometimes use normal view. How strange that I had never noticed.
