Cannot Insert Typing (Outlook 2003 SP2)

I am not sure if this is a Word or Outlook question but here it is. When I insert a picture in an email, I cannot type in the description to left or right of the picture (only above or below). It seems like regardless of how I position the picture, I just can't type on either side. Thanks, in advance, for any help !!!!!

Do you use Word as your e-mail editor?

I'm on Outlook 2000 at the moment, so I don't know if Outlook 2003 works the same. Try turning off Word as mail editor, and use HTML as default mail format. Insert | Picture should then create an inline picture.

Ok, that worked but the typing is inserted to the left or right of the bottom of the picture. Is there anyway to center the typing to the left or right of the height of the picture ?

    Try:
Create a 3 column table in Word
Format the cells for central vertical alignment and remove cell borders.
Insert the picture in the centre cell
Enter text in the left and right cells
Copy the table and paste into an (HTML) email.

A bit convoluted I'm afraid, but it does seem to work.

    Edited to add:
The attached screenshot is of the table in Word with the table borders unhidden for clarity. The borders do not show in the email itself.

Neither Outlook's built-in editor nor Word makes a good HTML editor. The first lacks a lot of features, the second burdens your messages with lots of excess code. Neither lets you tinker with the HTML, assuming you like tinkering.

If you are creating something that requires careful layout and is not just a quickie, you can create stationery using a "real" HTML editor and then create a new message from that stationery. Alternately, if you only want to insert a small block of HTML, Insert>File, then using the Insert as Text option, often does the trick. (I find it works best if the snippet has the <html> and <body> tags, and not just the specific code to be inserted.)
