    Shutting down Windows

My computer (Windows XP) has been refusing to shut down lately. I use the standard steps of going to START > TURN OFF COMPUTER. It "hangs up" and will not shut off, even if left to do it all night. I have checked for spyware, viruses (AVG-free edition, and Postini), and have a firewall (ZoneAlarm-free edition). Any suggestions? Thank you!!

    Re: Shutting down Windows

Only thing indicated when I rebooted in Safe Mode was:
"Windows Defender: Application failed to initialize: 0x80070006. The handle is invalid."
Would this cause problems with shutting down?

I'm not sure to be honest.
I would try uninstalling or re-installing Defender and seeing if that makes a difference to your shutdown problem, but wait and see if anyone else has better advice.

Take a look at The Elder Geek's troubleshooting XP shutdown issues page.

Have you examined the system event log to see if there is anything relevant? Check out Support WebCast: Microsoft Windows XP: Troubleshooting Startup and Shutdown Problems and How to troubleshoot by using the System Configuration utility in Windows XP for additonal troubleshooting information.
