What -- means in formula (Excel XP)

in this =sumproduct(--(colourlist =b16),,,,,,, what does the -- indicate? It is repeated in other parts of the formula as well. I know what the sumproduct formula is doing. I just don't understand the -- portion. Haven't seen before.

    Thanks.

ColourList=B16 results in either TRUE or FALSE. One - converts this to a numeric value -1 or 0. The second - simply changes this to 1 or 0. These numeric values can be used in multiplications/additions etc.
