    internet connection problem (xp home)

I am helping a friend who is having problems maintaining her internet connection. She has a Dell 2400 and connects to the internet through Cox Cable. Her system loses the internet connection irregularly for no good reason. I have brought her Dell to my home and connected to my Cox Cable internet connection without a problem. To test her Cox Cable internet connection, I brought over a loaner computer to her home and connected to her Cox Cable internet. The loaner computer maintained the internet connection without a problem. I brought her Dell 2400 back to her home and hooked up the Dell 2400 and in short order it began having problems with the internet connection. So the dilemma is that the loaner system maintained the internet connection at my friend's home without a problem. The Dell 2400 had no problem with the internet connection at my home. 'But when we connected the Dell 2400 to my friend;s Cox Cable internet connection, it still had problems. What can I do at this point? Should we switch to DSL for internet?

Does this happen during use of the machine or after a period of inactivity? Does the machine go into hibernation or standby? What XP service pack is installed? Is the machine fully patched? Have you run any of the usual a/v and anti-spyware products? Did you use the same physical ehternet cable ?

It happens during use and during inactivity. The machine does not go into hibernation or standby. SP2 is installed. The machine is fully patched. Yes, I have run A/V and antispyware products. I used the same ethernet cable on both the loaner system and the Dell 2400 at my friend's home.. Keep in mind that the loaner system works just fine on her internet connection. The Dell 2400 works fine on my internet connection (which is from Cox Cable, the same as her's)

Have you or she tried to get in touch with Cox support? Can you try putting in a different network card?

Yes we have been in touch with Cox. They have rewired her home - all new splitters, etc. It really can not be a Cox problem since the loaner system worked just fine at her home. I can try a different network card but my thought is why would the current card work at my home and not at her's?

It could be as simple as the PC was jostled around during the relocation and the card is not tightly seated or the card could be starting to go.

Is her machine at her place using a Cat 5 or a USB cable?
I have seen this type of action when a USB connetion is used.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
