    Word 2000 TOC 1st letter only (Word 2000)

    I have a large document with a TOC and indexes for each TOC listing. Most (99 %) of the TOC heading show correctly. It's the few that don't. It seems if I shorten the indexes for the problem TOC the full name will show in the TOC instead of only the 1st letter.
    I have downloaded and installed available updates for word 2000.
    How do I get the entire heading to appear?
    This is what I get for the questioned entry:
    C 1

    Hi,

    Are you able to attach a copy of your document, with just the TOC and the headings? That would make it easier to diagnose the problem.

    Cheers

    I am attaching a sample of the document. As you can see the problem is duplicated in the sample. You can see in the first heading the number of index entries and in the second I think there I one less and how the first heading has a problem in the TOC and the second doesn't.

    Try the following:
    - Right-click the TOC.
    - Select Update Field from the popup menu.
    - Select the option to update the entire table.
    - Click OK.

    Try the following:
    - Press Alt+F9 to display field codes. The TOC will look like { TOC o "1-3" h z }
    - Place the insertion point immediately after the closing field bracket }
    - Press Enter.
    - Select the entire first paragraph (with the TOC).
    - Select the Normal style.
    - Press Alt+F9 to hide field codes.
    - Press F9 to update the TOC (it should still be selected)
    - Select the option to update the entire table.
    - Press F9 again.
    - Select the option to update page numbers.

    I have attached the result of these actions on my PC (admittedly with Word 2002 SP-3, not Word 2000)

    Still nothing. I have download and installed all available upgrades. I just don't understand. I know I can shorten the number of index entries although I don't want to. All the others I don't have problems with, just a handful of them.

    What happens if you insert a paragraph break between the headings and the index entries, format the index entries as Normal, then update the TOC?

    As mentioned, the TOC updates correctly in Word 2002. Any chance that you can upgrade to Word 2002 or Word 2003?

    The latter suggestions works. I still find it odd that I can get the others to work but not the few. I may be able to upgraded to 2003 though.

    I don't think you need to upgrade Word just to get this to work properly. Try putting all the index entries into a new paragraph which follows the Heading - instead of including them in the Heading itself. If you style this paragraph as hidden then it won't add a space to the viewed/printed document unless your options show the hidden entries.

    I have attached your file with some simple modifications that demonstrate this.

    Thanks for showing me that. This might work. I will try it.
