Pest Patrol claims to be able to remove this variation.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
Today it is called golf!

But don't buy PestPatrol unless you don't know how to manually remove the files and registry entries that are listed at the bottom of the page. It may be a good program, but I have a hard time trusting an outfit that claims to remove every known form of malware and advertises all over the Google search results. Pest Patrol was a good product before the acquisition by Computer Associates; nowadays I have no idea.

One reason that ads can proliferate is that companies sometimes intentionally and sometimes inadvertently provide "affiliate" revenue for sales made via certain click-through codes. This leads to a huge amount of Adwords ads by people hoping to get a cut of action. Companies should consider these negative implications of affiliate programs for their reputations... but no one listens to me.

Too much is done these days, in the name of . And not enough is done in the name of common sense.

Re: Trojan.Win32.StartPage.adh

I've had unsatisfactory results with PestPatrol. The automatic updates do not work--checking settings carefully, looking for solutions in their FAQ, and writing technical support bring no results. Consequently, I have to manually update. I'm also not impressed with what the program doesn't find. If I run it first, it may or may not find anything much (the low-threat or benign spyware); when I then run AdAware and Spybot, I find many more serious instances of spyware.
