Cannot edit an 'Action' linked to the 'File Type' (XP)

As a summary,
The Edit button looks permanently disabled in the (without extensions, i.e.: folders) "files types" associated actions.

Sorry in advance for the length of my question. I'm far to be an expert in windows so allow me to explain step by step what I did and more or less understood, on the top of that I'm not english native speaker.

What I did happened here:
Control Panel --> Folder Options --> File Types

We see all the kinds, many lines under the 2 columns: "Extensions" and "File Types"

I selected the line where Extensions says "(NONE)" and where File types says "File Folder"

When I click the "Advanced" button, I'm supposed to manage the actions to be performed on any "file folder".

This "advanced " button open a window labelled "Edit File Type" which lists in a text box the different actions.

These actions are the commands available when I rightclick any folder file. On the top of the pop-up window, we usually see "Open, explore, find...)
Here starts my problem
I read in a PC magazine a (supposed to be) smart trick about adding there a DOS command listing a tree view of the folder content)

FYI: {command.com /c tree /F /A >c:listing.txt}
In the "Edit File Type" window, I added this new action using the "new" button
this command line works well

The problem is that now my default command, the one performed when I double-click a folder is not any more "Open" but "Search".
This is quite annoying
I have now to right-click the folder then to select the "Open" command if I want to get ridd of the now default search window.

I decided to remove my added action
I came back to the "Edit File Type" window
Unfortunately, the "Edit" button as well as the "Remove" button are always disabled

How can I remove the added action?

Allow me to keep the board posted if the windows newbee I am needs help for implementing it

If you have never looked at the registry before, then I would definitely recommend backing up the whole thing before you start. When you open the registry editor, you will see an explorer style interface. Right-click on My Computer at the top left of the left pane and choose export and save the file somewhere obvious. Then, if something should go wrong, you can simply double-click on the created .reg file to restore the whole registry to the way it was.

Re: Cannot edit an 'Action' linked to the 'File Type' (XP)

I was able to follow your backup instructions as well the microsoft step by step procedure till opening the level HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryshell

I noted in the right window under the "Name" column the ( default ) value I'm supposed to overwrite with ( none )

I am not sure this is the only correction to do because I've seen the same (default) value in the below levels.

My question is the following:

Do I have to perform the same changes (typing "none" where I read "default") in all the sublevels of shell, i.e.:
- the original "find", "command" and "ddeexec" and also
- the new command I created

Hope this makes sense

Regards

All you should have to do is double-click the Default key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryShell and set the value to
none
. This will set the default action action for Folders - i.e. what happens when you just double-click on a folder. The Default keys under the other entries set the default actions for those actions - i.e. the default entry under Find sets what actually happens when you choose Find. Those should not need to be altered.

I did it!
it works like before
(and btw, the enhancement which awoke the windows bug works perfectly fine also
I'm so happy I could add a personal right-click command!)

The solution to my problem looks so simple afterwards that I'm feeling a little bit ridiculous

Rory
