    ATI X1800XT 512mb gfx card

Ok so I bought this monster of a card a few months ago and it has been awsome. However lately I seem to be having issues with any game involving DirectX from microsoft. Meaning the game will lock and freeze the system. I know it has to be an issue somewhere with my graphics card because everything not using DX is fine and runs perfectly without issue. Not sure if this is the best area to post but I didn't see another topic area where this might fit. Any thoughts or ideas of what I may try to resolve my issue would be much appreciated.

Go to Start, Run, and enter: dxdiag and run through all the tests and see what it reports.

Do you have the latest DirectX and ATI drivers?

    First of all, drool..... <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Second, I had a similar problem and it turned out to be unrelated ot software. I discovered that my power supply was underpowered - even after running fine in the system for many games over a 2-year span with the same video card. When I tried to play Unreal Tournament 2004, it started crashing. I'm not sure if it's DX or OpenGL, but it seemed at first like a software problem. Then I remembered the cheapo power supply I used when building the system. I replaced it with a nicer power supply and that fixed everything!

Not sure if this is even related, but hopefully it will give you another angle to check after you've satisfied the obvious software and driver issues.

Well Mark I am using a pretty decent 550 power supply. So I hope its not that. What kind of Power Supply do you run? Also I've run dxdiag many times and it says everything is good to go. Also I have all the most up to date drivers for both DX and the ATI card.

Ahh - since you've got a decent power supply then my idea is probably not even close.

In order for the power supply to fix my problem, my old PSU was borderline on the power (300 or 350 W) and very cheap (< $20 US). The upgrade is an OCZ 420W - plenty of juice to power my P4 2.4, ATI X800 XL video card, 2 hard drives, 2 optical drives and 6 fans.

yeah my enermax 550 does great. If it was the Power supply I wouldn't see why it would only have these issues with DirectX games. Of course I do know that ATI and Microsoft have had there compatibility issues for quite some time. Might try downloading an earlier driver set and seeing if that could be the issue.

Have you checked the readme to see if those games are listed as known problems? Have you checked ATI Customer Care?

Re: ATI X1800XT 512mb gfx card

Well I have discovered what I think my main problem is. From my understanding working around the forums on the ASUS site to see if any others have had a similar issue or not. Anyway it seems anyone using the K8N4-E Delux mohterboard with the nForce4 chipset on it are having problems with ATI cards from the X300 to the X1900. Same kind of thing. Always with games or applications using 3D acceleration and a few other things. So apparently my problem is extending more from my mobo than anything else that I could discover. Can't ATI and nVidia just get along once in a while?

Re: ATI X1800XT 512mb gfx card

ok an update for you guys. I went ahead and ordered a new motherboard. I talked with ASUS and it is a known problem with that board but they aren't planning on a fix for some time yet so I decided to cut my losses on that and get a new board. Of course I will use the one I have now for a new computer so it doesnt go to waste but I'll put an nVidia in that one. Anyway just wanted to let you guys know that the nForce4 chipset is at the moment not compatible with ATI cards from the X300 to the X1900. At least as far as my understanding has been from what I've discovered

That's good to know. I probably won't be able to buy/build a new system for about 6 more months, but I'll keep that in mind when the time comes.

Glad you're on the path to resolving this issue!

Re: ATI X1800XT 512mb gfx card

Ok here is the official word. The nVidia nForce4 X4 chipset is the only nForce4 set to have problems. If you have nForce4 SLI or nForce4 x16 then it will run with the ATI PCI-E cards no problem. However, there is a minor fix you can do with the nForce4 X4 chipset. If you set the Hyper Transport to X1 instead of having it at X4 then you can run whatever and it will not crash. It's a quick fix but still reduces performance slightly. I went ahead and got a new board with the ATI Radeon 200P Xpress chipset. So far I have had no issues with it and it works great.

Thats what I do. Hate leaving a thread like this open with no solution. This way I can also point to others a place to look. With no fix on the horizon I just got the new board and it works like a dream.

Sounds like you have a dreamy system! I'm curious to hear your frame rates on various games that you play...
