    Saving Picture with Text

    Hi,

We have pictures which we add text over them manually in Paint Shop Pro V7. However if we save them as a Jpeg the text section is quite blurry, if we save them as a gif the picture can only display 256 colour, which I understand, but does not look good on a photograph.

anyone have any suggestions on how to get round the problem.
    Best Regards,

    Luke

A place to start would be the Save As, JPG, Options button. It's been a long time since Version 7 for me, so I can't remember how this window will look for you. Here's a screenshot from my Version 10. You could start with a test of using a lower compression factor to see if that improves the readability of the finished picture. You should also consider the font you're using for the text and whether any gains can be had by tweaking that to bold or a tiny bit larger size. These may not be viable for you, but worth a look.

How big a file can you tolerate? Using either "high quality" JPEG or 24-bit PNG (or even 8-bit PNG) should fix the text problem, but will give you a much larger file than you might want.

Is it for print or for screen?

    Hi Luke

    A few more questions.....
Are you importing the text from another application?
Are you using a truetype font or a bitmap font?
Is your text doctored....semi transparent, 3D, twisted, etc.?
What does it look like if it has been saved in tiff or png formats?
Are you using the anti-alias feature when saving?
What application are you using to view the image when the blurring occurs?

Saving as jpeg shouldn't make any part of an image blurry as all layers are merged into one. If any blurring effect happens, it should apply to the whole image.

    Have a Great day!!!

Strangely, the type of JPEG compression that seems fairly harmless on photos is bad with large areas of flat color. Screen shots of Windows dialogs are a good example. All sorts of strange "artifacts" are introduced for no apparent reason.

    Re: Saving Picture with Text

The images are purely for screen on a webpage.

The jpeg image size is 66.5KB without the text on
If we save the jpeg as a gif with the sold text on, it is 60KB

If we can preserve the same file size and not bloat it, it would be good.
    Best Regards,

    Luke

    Re: Saving Picture with Text

Thanks for your response and sorry for not getting back to you until now. In answer to your questions:

Are you importing the text from another application? - No, using it in PSP7
Are you using a truetype font or a bitmap font? Using a font called Perpetua, which according to windows is a TrueType font
Is your text doctored....semi transparent, 3D, twisted, etc.? - The font is rotated to approx 45 degrees
What does it look like if it has been saved in tiff or png formats?
Are you using the anti-alias feature when saving? - In the font section of adding it to the image anti-aliasing is set as 'ticked',
What application are you using to view the image when the blurring occurs? - Internet Explorer, photograph is clear, text is blury / pixelated
    Best Regards,

    Luke

Try ticking the "Vector" option (in the Create As section with Antialias option) and the "Auto Kern" option (above the B, I, U text options). HTH
