Table formatting (WORD 03)

I can't get a table to allow me to change the formatting of it. I started out using one of the predefined table templates. The letters are all spread out in the entries in column 2 (this is a three column table). When I go open the task pane for Styles and Formatting and go to select the new one I want, table will not allow me to change style!!!!!!

Could you post a small sample document?

Letters all spread out like the paragraph is justified to both the left and right margins? That seems like a very odd default table format... if you re-apply the table style does that help? Has the style gotten redefined somehow?

I have gone under FONT/Character Spacing and selected NORMAL in a table that has a middle column of entries all of which the text spacing has gotten EXPANDED someway and I Don't Want expanded spacing. When I select character spacing "normal" for that middle table column (after I've hightlighted the column first) it is NOT saved/applied. Is there a way to fix this? I believe where this went to hell is that I selected autoformat at the beginning of building this table (big mistake, I suppose....)

I think it would be helpful per Hans' request to attach a sample of your problem table to your next post.

Probably "Table > Table properties > Cell > Options... > Fit text"
...glad it's not only me that occasionally gets baffled by this setting.
