Add to Dictionary button not available (2002)

I have migrated Office to a new laptop and have two problems I can't fix or find in the DB:
    1. I have set up a custom dictionary but I can't add words to it during spellchecking because the add button is not operative.
    2. I am unable to frmat individual paragraphs. Any format change is applied to the whole document, including the header.
    All assistance greatfully received.
    Cheers from godzone

    For your issue number 2.

It sounds as though you may have set your normal style to Automatically Update. Try the following steps to clear this...

    Format > Styles and Formatting...
Click the little down arrow next to Normal
    Modify...
Clear the Automatically Update check box
    OK

About problem 1: has the custom dictionary been set up for the same language as the text you're checking?

Thanks Hans, that's fixed it. I will make an appointment to get the egg surgically removed from my face.
