    can't save file (xl2000 on W2k SR1)

Last week I was unable to save a workbook. I kept getting a dialog saying "Document Not Saved" when doing File/Save or Ctrl-S or quit/save, etc. I couldn't even do a SaveAs (it would change the file name but I still couldn't save it to disk). I ended up killing the Excel task and thereby losing all my changes. Any clues as to what might of caused this?

I remember this happening to me a while back while experimenting with some VBA code, best as I can remember you might try one or more of the following to track down the cause (this was on a E2000/98SR2 machine):

Try the Ctrl-Alt-Del (the three fingered salute) and see if more than one instance of Excel is running.

Make sure the workbook is not read only.

Make sure that VBA code is not hung up.

Check your Windows/Temp directory and delete all the files there (Warning: Do so at your own risk. This has worked for me numerous times before, however, on your machine and with W2K the results might be different.)

Some possibilities to check for would be:
Can you save other applications files to the same directory? If not has the permissions on that directory changed.
Copy files in the temp directory to another directory and try the save-as command agian
Some virus checkers create caches, and Excel becomes confused and thinks that there is two instances of the file open. If you try a save-as to your C drive, and the file cannot be saved, then it is probable that this is the cause. Try stoppping any virus programmes. <img src=/S/thinks.gif border=0 alt=thinks width=15 height=15>

I had the same problem. Excel 97 SR-1, NT. I believe it was caused when someone else opened up the file. I tried everything from changing the name and location and deleting temp files. There was no way I was going to close it and lose all my changes. I did notice that the File/Properties were corrupted. I did come up with a fix. I copied each tab into a new workbook and saved the workbook under a different name! <img src=/S/clever.gif border=0 alt=clever width=15 height=15> Keep it simple I say!
