    BLOCKED::Outbind:// Hyperlink (Outlook 2003)

    A colleague of mine has produced a Newsletter using Word as an editor. This works fine when viewed as a web page within Word.

    He can create an HTML format email, copy the entire contents of the word document and paste into the email, and then send this document out, all the links work perfectly. The internal links within the Newsletter appear as Outbind:// followed by some numbers and the name of the bookmark.

    If I take the identical word document and paste the content to an html format email then the links look fine before I send the mail, but all the hyperlinks on the received mail start BLOCKED::Outbind:// and they don't work at all. Clicking on one of these causes a file open dialogue box to apear looking for files of type EXE.

    I tried moving Outlook security from the restricted zone to the internet zone, but this didn't help.

    Any suggestions?

    Further experiments show that I can get working links if I create the mail message by using Word's File > Send To > Mail Recipient menu item, unfortunately this doesn't give me the opportunity to fix a couple of conversion errors that I was previously dealing with in the mail message before hitting the send button!

    Can you do it the other way? Save your Word-HTML (filtered, preferably) to disk and then have Outlook create a new message using your Word-HTML as stationery?

    Thanks for the thoughts. I've never used stationary before but it seemed easy enough. I saved as Web Page Filtered and added this as my stationary in Tools > Options > Mail Format.

    Unfortunately this threw away all the pictures, and changed all the column widths and font colours!

    What I would really like is the ability to edit the <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> html, that Outlook hides from me. I know what I want to do and I can't see any obvious way of doing it.

    Given that I seem to get loads of well crafted HTML emails, what tools do people generally use to create these and how do they get them into Outlook?

    A thought (perhaps of peripheral value): maybe your colleague uses the send as e-mail option in Word (File|Send To|Mail Recipient). That way, the whole thing (including the HTML editing) is accessible in Word. If he/she does not, would that not perhaps still be a way forward? HTH

    My colleague claims to be doing exactly what I tried - Select all in Word, Copy, switch to Outlook, create HTML formatted email, Paste.

    I can't use (File|Send To|Mail Recipient) as that sends the mail without giving me a chance to edit it in Outlook, and the conversion from Word to Outlook causes some formatting problems (hyperlinks in a bulleted list extending the underline to the bullet, one particular image disappearing).

    Though I have no doubt that you have also already diligently tried to match all your colleague's settings - has that (clutching at straws, perhaps) also included Tools|Options|General|E-mail Options (bottom right of the tab)? (I'd even suggest Web Options (next to it) - although that may well not flow into HTML mail.) HTH

    Unkamunka,

    I am running Outlook 2003 SP2 in Exchange Server mode. It doesn't have Tools | Options | General | Email Options..., only Tools | Options | Preferences | Email Options... and this doesn't seem to have anything very helpful.

    I have now tried sending the same email via a POP3 service, from a different PC - with all the same versions and patches - and it behaves exactly the same.

    The attachment is a very very cut down version of this word document, with all pictures replaced by clipart - it behaves exactly the same as the real one. If anyone else would like to try copying the content to an html email and sending it to themselves I would be very interested to know if the links on the left hand side still work on the received email.

    Mea Culpa - key word missing in my previous post: I meant the Options in Word - not those in Outlook!

    Gosh, I'd never seen those options before - I increased the formatting detail/size from medium to high, but it didn't help.

    That I couldn't say. Too many are created in Word. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    I generally like to hand-craft my HTML, save to disk, and then use Insert>File, dropping down the Insert button and choosing Insert as Text. But I don't generally embed huge newsletters...

    I did test your newsletter pasting from Word 2002 to Outlook 2003 and sending it to myself. The images worked out fine. I wonder whether there is something new in Word 2003 that could make a difference? The web options mentioned in another branch of this thread might help.

    The problem isn't images, but hyperlinks that won't work.

    'frayed knot. I tried setting and clearing a range of options but it made no difference.

    Oh, the links. Obviously I am having a hard time paying attention today.

    The internal links in my test look like <a href="outbind://1060/#_top"> which is nonfunctional and pops up a dialog.

    The external link to wikipedia is fine.

    Re: BLOCKED::Outbind:// Hyperlink (Outlook 2003)

    It's those inbound links that are the problem. When my colleague pastes this into Outlook they work.

    When I do the same thing, the links pop up a dialog box - browsing for an EXE file. If I edit the received message and use Insert > Hyperlink to look at one of them then it has a url of BLOCKED:utbind://1060#_top which looks like it might be trying to tell me something.

    Immediately after pasting the Word doc into Outlook those links already look wrong. I'm not sure why this happens; something about the "on-the-fly" conversion from DOC to HTML to Outlook is going horribly wrong. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
