To Hibernate, or not ... (XP Service Pac 1)

Because it takes my (3 yr old) Dell latitude a considerable amount of time to boot-up in the morning, rather than shut-down each evening I've been setting it to Hibernate instead. I know my help-desk will tell me not to do this (as it defeats the log-on security etc) but I'm wondering if there are other 'good' reasons to shut-down, rather than hibernate. I do close all the applications first (which means I need to log-on securly to outlook each AM).

    Any thoughts?

We do that with a couple of machines at work. It seems to be just fine. I encourage people to periodically boot the system anyway just in case there is a memory leak or you've had applications abort that might leave dlls around.

I set my laptop at home to hibernate when I close the lid - it's much faster shutting down as well as starting up. But when I do start up, I still have to log in, albeit not to a network.
Like Joe, I suggest shutting down proper - or at least re-booting - once every few days. There is (usually) always some unnecessary process that can be cleared down.

I've never been able to work out how to un-hibernate a PC, so I always turn this feature off!

I usually hibernate my laptop, I only reboot it if it is misbehaving - about once or twice a week.

I just press the power key, it then un-hibernates (about 15 seconds) and "Bob's your uncle"!

When I did that, the PC powered off!

Sadly their attribution of the origin of the phrase "Bob's Your Uncle" is probably "Pop Etymology"!

I got that from this Google search. No real answer to this one I think. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    It must be a different Bob then, <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> - but it did make for a slightly longer thread ...
