Windows media won't stream (10)

I listen to streaming audio every day. however today I can't get anything. The player says connecting, then goes to "ready", but doesn't play anything. I tried 5-6 sites that I know work and, execpt for the short commercial some of them have before actually connecting you to the station, I get nothing other than the "ready".
I have not changed any settings.
HELP

Re: Windows media won't stream (10)

I don't know what you mean. i have go to one of about 15 different radio station web sites that do streaming audio. click on "listen live" and then the windows media player opens. If that station has a commercial, it will play the 30 second commercial. when it goes to connect it says "connecting" for just a moment, then "ready" comes up, instead of "buffering". I have tried about 15 different stations that worked yesterday for me, was able to connect the normal way using my wife's laptop. so there is no web site problem or internet problem. it must be something with my computer....

Re: Windows media won't stream (10)

I just tried something else that may help us troubleshoot. I went to another radio station to listen live and this time I got this error:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. In the Open URL dialog, try opening the file using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").
Now all I did was click the "listen live" button on the web site for WCBE 90.5 FM (in case someone wants to try that site out for me).
does this help anyone help me?

That's what I wanted to know. I don't have time tonight to research this, but if it isn't solved when I log on tomorrow, I'll check into it.

Re: Windows media won't stream (10)

yes. everything works as it always did, until the player says "ready" instead of "buffering". when I click play, it momentarily says "connecting" then goes to "ready". The only time this would happen legitimately is if I log into major league baseball to listen to a game. if the game hasn't started, it will do the same thing. Problem is, this happens EVERYTIME i go anywhere to listen to anything.
I have looked everywhere and no one else seems to have a problem like this. I have rolled back my Windows media player from 10 to version 9. I wish I could do a complete uninstall, then reinstall.
did you see my post about the error? that has to be a clue for someone....
thanks for your efforts...i'm desparate...I can't listen to any ballgames!

Re: Windows media won't stream (10)

ok I think it is fixed. I mentioned I rolled back windows media player to version 9 and still had the problem. I couldn't find an easy way to upgrade it back...I couldn't find the wmp "check for upgrade" like a lot of software programs have.
anyways it popped up to upgrade, i did, and now it seems to be working.
thanks again for all who messed around with me on this.

Sounds like a setting got changed or the installation became corrupt . Chalk it up to one of those unexplainable computer foibles and hope it never happens again.
