    Emptying temporary internet files

I have my browser set to "empty temporary internet files when browser is closed". but after closing the browser, if I drill into this folder the temp files are still there.

I've never been able to figure out why this doesn't work, and have (for years) been manually doing it on a weekly basis.

    Am I missing something?

Win2K, sp2, up to date with all patches.

    Thanks

    Re: Emptying temporary internet files

I used to find with my old PC (which ran Win 98 and crashed a lot) that if IE closed in an orderly way, then the temporary internet files were cleared by using that option. But if there was a crash, so that I had to restart the PC without an orderly closure of IE, then the files were not cleared, and they stayed uncleared at the next orderly shut-down too. (That is, next time it cleared the files from that session, but left the uncleared ones from the previous time.)

You didn't say what browser you're using - is it Internet Explorer? What happens if you use the Windows "cleanup" command and then drill into the folder? Does cleanup (%SystemRoot%system32cleanmgr.exe) clear all the temporary files? (Trying to determine if it's a Windows global problem or IE specifically.)

Thanks for the input. When I use the windows cleanup manager, it goes into it's archiving of infrequently used objects and that just hangs. Even if I tell it to not do the archiving. What a peice of crap that is.

    I use IE 6.0.

I guess I'll continue to manually clean it up myself.

If you're interested, there are numerous <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> tools that can do the job for you. You can automate the process by running them at startup or as a scheduled task.

You can stop cleanmgr.exe from doing that and it will do the job it should do and not compress any files. To make this change, Open regedit. Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionExplorerVolumeCaches

    Delete the entry
