Next????

This is a curiosity question - just wondering what others think.

I am running Win 2000 with all fixes applied with Firefox for my browser. I seem to be able to support everything I can think of in terms of hardware and software. I am wondering if there is anything lurking on the horizon that could concievably make me feel that I would need to invest in the next big Windows thingy? I find it hard to imagine anything but incremental tweeks for me in the future.

I am definitely not an "Early Adaptor", but just curious about the future with MS?

PS. I have not experienced any software problems that would make me worried about if or when MS drops support for win 2000.

You'll be fine for a few years, no doubt, but as time goes on, more and more programs will require a later version of Windows. For example:

Office XP (released in 2001) required Windows 98 or NT4 or later.
Office 2003 requires Windows 2000 or XP or later.
Office 2007 will require Windows XP or 2003 or later.

I tend to agree with Hans, and I also confess that it will probably be a while before I upgrade my version of Office (for various reasons). Lack of security patches would be the most compelling reason to upgrade from Windows 2000 to something newer, at least for the short term.

I agree with the above, and you will find later as you may want some of the new Toys (hardware) that will be coming, you will need a newer machine with the Vista OS.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

You can go to Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Windows Vista Activity Center for a peek at some screen shots of the next MS desktop OS. What you decide about upgrading really depends on how you use your PC and what YOU perceive to be the benefits.

If Windows Vista is significantly more resistant to viruses and malware, that would be a good reason to upgrade.

That's a big if! I say this only because Windows will continue to be the most attacked OS of the several choices, being that it's in use so widely. Still... I share your optimism.
