Word will not start (Office 2000 SR-1)

Out of the blue, Word will no longer starts. I get a dialog box simply labeled "Program Error", and the exact message is: "Winword.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created." The only option is to click on the "OK" button. This is an endless loop and it will no longer open. The other office suite programs continue to open just fine (Excel, Powerpoint, etc.). I haven't loaded any new software or added hardware. I haven't made any changes or updates to the operating system (Windows 2000 SR-2). I first tried a "repair" install and that didn't solve anything. I then uninstalled and reinstalled the entire suite, including SR-1. The problem persists and Word (alone) will not load. Reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system and all programs sure seems like a smashed mouth approach to solving this (not to mention very painful) but short of that , I haven't a clue what might work. Suggestions welcomed....or should I say I am begging....HELP!! <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15>

Re: Word will not start (Office 2000 SR-1)

I think I can help with this one. Step 1 - launch Word using the /a switch. Start -Run and type in winword.exe /a. Does it launch? Then that tells us something is wrong. Run a search for the "Startup" folders. Word generally has 2, and any files in them can be responsible for this. They can be moved from the "Startup" folder without any loss of add-in functionality. If this isn't the fix, try renaming Normal.dot to Normal.old. Word is based on this template and it gets corrupted from time to time. These problems cannot be resolved by re-installing or Repair. Any questions, please feel free to ask. My Word has crashed numerous times and these fixes always have resolved the problem.

I removed any reference to anything in MSOffice from all start up groups. I renamed normal.dot to normal.old. Word still will not start. When I try launching the program with the "winword.exe /a" switch, the program does then launch. What does that switch do (in other words, do I lose functionality by using it permanently)? If I don't, I will launch the program using that switch from now on. Thank you for your reply.

It launches the application without any start-up templates. Another place to check while you're in there is Tools / Templates and Add-Ins. Not all active templates are in the startup directory. Frequently the pdfWriter.dot will corrupt and cause difficulties.
