Windows Paint and JPeg

Hi,
Due to the nature of my work I operate between many PC's. I have noticed that the Paint Application on some PC's running WinXP have the ability to save a picture as BMP or JPeg, and on other PC's, also running WinXP, the Paint Apllication can only save BMP file format with 256 or 16 bit or 24 bit . Why is this and how can it be contralled so all PC's can also save JPeg?

Any ideas?
Tx
Regards,
Rudi

Are you sure that the PC's with a "limited" Paint are running Windows XP? Microsoft has gradually added more file types with each new version of Windows.

I went to check now...as you mentioned this. And you are correct. The PC had WinXP on it on Wednesday. I used it again yesterday when I noticed Paint only had BMP file format, but I did not realise that the PC had been downgraded to Win 2000 for training purposes. Tx for clearing that up!

If you can get software installed on these PCs check out the Paint.NET.

I don't use Paint, but I've heard that if you open a file of the type that you want Paint to open with Paint (jpg, gif, tif, png), it should then have the ability to open and work with that file type.

Tx guys....your comments are recieved warmly!

Macropod: In our training faciltiy, all the PC's are ghosted with the same Image, Win 2000 Prof, and Office XP. I checked on two different PC's that were loaded with the same image, and both Paint Versions are like yours, and one has JPeg and BMP, and the other only BMP...

I must still read the links posted in this thread, but its unusual to see the difference???
Cheers

TX Alan...I see your link explains the reasons....You require a file filter to be present in a folder in the program files and windows directories...

Cheers!

Rudi
