    USB2 on USB 1

    If I do NOT have a USB2 port, will a USB 2 device work on it?

    Regards,

    Yes, but at USB1 speed, not at USB2 speed.

    Hans:

    Thanks... that's OK for right now... I'm getting a USB Flash drive, and I wanted to be able to use the on board usb and not purchase anything else...

    Just so you are aware, it will be a very slow transfer speed. 12Mbits/second vs the USB2 speed of 480Mbits/second.

    Honestly Chuck, you may not really see a difference.

    I've got built in USB1.1 ports on my notebook PC, and an PCMCIA USB2.0 expansion card for the same notebook. Using my iPod on both ports, I don't see any difference that would be noticable.

    Now, depending on the size of the file, and the amount you use it... you might see something different.

    I'd try it first. You may find, like Chris, that you don't notice a difference. I was just warning you ahead of time, so you didn't think something was broken, if it was much slower than you expected.

    Re: USB2 on USB 1

    You should be very wary of any device marked USB2. The correct designation is Hi-Speed USB, and the package should be marked with this logo.
    <IMG SRC=http://www.usb.org/developers/compliance/logo/usb_hs_125.gif>

    USB2 is a whole family of implementations, which support data rates of 1.5Mb, 12Mb or 480Mb, only the 480Mb speed is Hi-Speed USB.

    See http://www.usb.org/about/usb_nomenclature for more info.
