    IE for Win 98

Helping out a neighbor installing a new HP printer on his Win98 machine.....Now I need help....
I had to download a different driver for 98 from HP(that supplied would not load on 98 machine). This almost loaded the driver ...until it stopped requiring IE be upgraded to at least version 5.0.2919.6306 from the current 5.0.1.
Now the problem, the computer has no internet connection....the IE downloads from MS only give you the setup file. Where can I get an upgraded IE, or is there a work around for this problem. I do have office 2000 with IE on it but it is listed as 5.0 (maybe it is at least 5.0.3). All my other office and window disks are xp level.

    Any Ideas????

I'm sure you've found the link for the IE downloads but in case not, here is a link for IE downloads for version 6 or you could try downloading version 7, beta version.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...s/default.mspx

Use another friend's PC that has access to the internet, download it and then burn it to a CD. Then you should be able to load it on to your neighbor's PC. If for some reason you can't do that, maybe someone else can come up with another solution.

Yes I did try to download Version 6, problem is that it is only a setup file that then goes out to MS for the files to install and proceeds with the installation. It also cuts me off since I have a more recent version....

Your suggested approach was what I did for the HP driver.......

    Re: IE for Win 98

    Final Resolution
Installing by copy became too difficult...
I took an Office 2000 and updated but the IE was still too old to mount the HP driver. So.....
On a wild chance I tried to load Office XP. It immediately started updating system files, including IE (I think) until it could not find some files (not in the old Win98??) and stopped.
I now had the old Office 2000 and a higher version of Internet Explorer.
The HP driver now loaded easily....HP seems to have established IE from Office XP as its minimum.

    Everything works..... <img src=/S/bananas.gif border=0 alt=bananas width=33 height=35>

Now you can only hope that there isn't a catastrophic hardware failure... <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19> Glad you got it worked out!
