    How To Extract TAR.GZ File

I want to try OpenOffice on my Win2K machine. The download is a compressed file with the extension shown above. The website says to just doubleclick on the file to extract it, but when I do that, Windows asks me what program to use for the extraction. Help!

Try to open it with WinZip. (You can download a free evaluation version from <A target="_blank" HREF="http://www.winzip.com/">WinZip

In addition to what Hans said, there are many <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> zip/unzip utility programs that can handle tar.gz. Note that GZIP is a compression format, not an archiver, so not all utilities will treat the tar.gz format the same. That said, the adaptations for Windows/ PC should handle them as an "unzipper" would. You could try, for example, 7-Zip 4.37

Re: How To Extract TAR.GZ File

There is an easier way! On the OpenOffice site at http://www.openoffice.org/index.html when you click on the Get OpenOffice link you can select your language and operating system. Choosing English and Windows you should be able to download an .exe file that installs OpenOffice for Windows without worrying about tarballs and all that. The latest seems to be called OOo_2.0.2_Win32Intel_install_wJRE.exe (that's the one with the Java run time engine), or OOo_2.0.2_Win32Intel_install.exe is the version without JRE. You download it, you run the .exe file and it installs like any Windows program.

    Hope that helps.
