Windows OneCare and incoming mail protection

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

We have read all the hoopla about Windows new OneCare all-around protection. See here everything that OneCare does: OneCare Fact Sheet

We already use the Defender part, and the firewall that comes with XP SP2. But the big question is: We still cannot find anything about Windows OneCare Antivirus that protects incoming e-mail.

Does anyone know for sure whether OneCare automatically scans incoming mail for viruses?

    Much obliged for your help!

I didn't see anything about it on the web site. You could try tech support: http://www.windowsonecare.com/suppor...alsupport.aspx.

Thanks, Jeff, also for the link. Will check it out. The protection isn't much good without the incoming scan. David

I'm not sure how quickly one would want to switch to OneCare in any event... Microsoft just renewed its relationship with Trend Micro for the virus scanning used for Hotmail mailboxes (Google News), which isn't a vote of confidence for its in-house technology. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

From the Windows Live OneCare - Help Center:

"Does Antivirus monitor my e-mail or Instant Messaging attachments?
By default Windows Live OneCare Antivirus monitoring checks any attachments to instant messages that come to your computer via MSN Messenger. If an attachment contains a potential virus, Antivirus blocks the file and notifies you.
For other e-mail or instant messaging programs, Antivirus monitoring checks all attachments when you try to open them, and blocks the file if it contains a potential virus.

In general, you should always use caution in opening all attachments to e-mail or instant messages. "

Thanks, Jeff. I think we'll wait a while before switching over from eTrust anti-virus. David

Thanks, Joe. I think we'll stick with eTrust AntiVirus, which catches the viruses as they come into your mail-client inbox.

We'll wait a bit before changing to One.Care.
