Sharing an external USB HDD over a LAN?

Is there a way to share an external USB 2.0 HDD over a LAN? I have 2 Win XP PCs connected via a Linksys (hardwired) router and would like to be able to share the USB HDD with both machines. Specifically, it would be nice to be able to save True Image backups to the the external HDD on the PC that it isn't connected to. Possible?

Re: Sharing an external USB HDD over a LAN?

I'm not gonna point you to other threads, Jeff, but if you've been reading here in The Lounge, you know that I also have a USB external drive connected to my new Dell computer for backup purposes. I have shared this drive and it can be seen on my LAN. I've gone to my other (remaining) computer and started the TrueImage backup program, and it easily sees the external drive on this machine. I admit I haven't tried to complete the process with an actual backup, but as far as I've gone before cancelling, it looks like it should be OK. Give 'er a try...

I had totally forgotten about simply "Sharing" the external drive. . Yep.. sharing it should do the trick. As you wrote, the backup partition on the USB drive does showup in the newest version of True Image. I'll have to give it a try next time I want to create a backup on the other PC.

    Thanks for jarring my brain!

Re: Sharing an external USB HDD over a LAN?

Just 'cause I couldn't stand the 'not knowing' I just tried making a backup of a partition on the 'upstairs computer' to the external USB drive on this one. Worked like a champ. I don't know how good the network speed was for it was a small, 2 GB partition I backed up and it took about 9 or 10 minutes. But it worked.

Edited to add: I should have said that as is my wont in such cases, I mounted the image (plugged) on this, the destination machine, and checked a handful of the files and they all seem to be intact.
