    Cannot Open Protected Workbook (2000+)

I have a friend that's running Excel from Office 2000. Someone sent him a protected spreadsheet created in Excel. When he tries to open it, he gets the following error message:

This document is password-protected or encrypted. Open it in the application that saved it, remove the password or encryption, then save it again. Then try to open it again in works.

He sent the file to me and I could open it without a problem (Excel2002) and he sent it to his brother who also could open it (but I don't know what version of Excel the brother is running).

Any clues as to his problem opening this?

Re: Cannot Open Protected Workbook (2000+)

Starting with Office XP (2002), Microsoft made more advanced encryption algorithms available for protecting Office documents than the rather weak default algorithm used in Office 2000 and before. It can be set by clicking Advanced in the Security tab of Tools | Options...

If the author of the workbook has Excel 2002 or 2003 and used strong encryption, the workbook cannot be opened in Excel 2000 or earlier.

NB I also notice that the error message says "... Then try to open it again in works". Are you sure that your friend is using Excel 2000, and not the spreadsheet in Microsoft Works?

He told me he was NOT using Works. I found that a strange error message in light of that.
Do you think if I resave the file with the setting to "office 97/2000 compatible" that he'll be able to open that copy?

I hope so. You can also save the workbook unprotected and give it to him. He can re-protect it in Excel 2000.

Unfortunately, I can't save it unprotected because the person to sent it to him originally passworded the protection.
