Re: Windows Explorer (XPP - SP2)

If none of the file types allow you to change them, the only explanation I can think of is that you are not logged in with administrative rights. If only some are unavailable, particularly those at the top of the list with NONE listed as the extension, then the behavior is by design.

Can you clarify this for us?

I am the only account that is set up as the system administrator, something has toggle-ed these not to let me access these two ghosted buttons, probably that confounded MicroSoft OS has a control link
selecting this to not be allowed to be accessed, I can add to this list, this is the menu list that comes up when you Right Click as an Example a Desk Top Icon.

    Try the following:
    - Go to Kelly Theriot's Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP.
    - Scroll down to the line numbered 314.
    - Right-click on "File Associations are Greyed Out" on the left hand side.
    - Select Save Target As from the popup menu.
    - Save the .reg file to a convenient folder on your hard disk.
    - From Windows Explorer, open (double-click) the downloaded .reg file.
    Hopefully this corrects the problem.

Ah, but which entries are you not able to modify - some, or all? Certain icons cannot be changed from within Explorer, nor can the actions for items like folders, URLs, and others. Can you imagine the problems that would come from accidentally changing the default action for FOLDER to open with, for example, your email program? If Hans' post does not help, then you are almost certainly dealing with these "root" or "core" associations that were never intended to be under user control.
