    Partition Magic 8

On my Sony PCG-K47 laptop, there is hidden and the C partition. The only partition I can do any thing with is the hidden partition.
I would like to split the C partition into 2 so I can duel boot.

I will bet that BigAl is going to tell me I need to get "Acronis Disk Director "

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Partition Magic 8

Partition Magic should do the job.

It's often available for little, or no, cost AFTER rebates.
I purchased a 2nd copy for $0 aFTER rebates in Feb from http://www.buy.com.
You may periodically find such offers buy.com, outpost.com, CompUSA, BestBuy, Circuit city, etc.

The Acronis Disk Director product is also supposed to be good, but I've not tried it.

En Garde! (or on guard, whichever you prefer!)

Sorry Dave, I fell asleep in my big leather recliner last evening, as is my wont these days. And thnx to Bob for stepping in. No, I won't tell you you NEED to get the Acronis product, but I would if I were you, for the longer term.

Partition Magic will (or should) do the job. I've no experience with Sony, so I don't know if they've "monkeyed" with the C: drive to prevent making changes.

    Happy Easter...

I used Paragon's Disk Manager for a similar problem on an IBM laptop; which it handled without breaking a sweat. I should add that, a few years back, I handled a repartition on a Sony laptop using the freeware Partition Resizer - although that laptop did not have a hidden partition.

Another possibility is Partition Commander. See http://www.v-com.com/solutions/disk_organization.html.

    Re: Partition Magic 8

As I said Dave, mine is a Dell (not a Sony laptop) and the Dell has two such "funny" partitions. Just as a test, I used Disk Director to cut my C: partition in half and then I re-sized it back to the original plus a little bit of unallocated space that had been sitting there since I got the machine. The two operations committed without a hitch. You can download a trial (I think) but I think it will act like it's gonna do the job, BUT won't let you commit the changes. At least you'd know if the PRODUCT would work or not.

Edited: To correct a typo! I originally said "...with a hitch..." and didn't (obviously) mean that!

    Re: Partition Magic 8

Downloaded and installed Disk Director Demo. Was able to make a minimal partition (7.?? megs).
Partition was made. I am at this time resizing the C and new F partitions using Partition Magic.
    It appears to have worked.

I will be BUYING a copy of Disk Director real soon.

    Dave,
Curious. Why did you use Disk Director to create the partition but use Partition Magic to resize the C & F?
Why not do both with DD?

    Re: Partition Magic 8

Partition Magic would NOT allow me to change the C drive. It was locked some way by Sony, and I could ONLY select the "Hidden" partition. But with Disk Director, it was NOT locked, but all I had was the Demo version, which allowed me to make the 7 meg partition. I did NOT want to buy another program and find out that it would NOT work also. Once the new partition was made, the C drive and the new partition could be resized with Partition Magic.

I will be getting a copy of Disk Director soon.
