    Word 2003 merge (2003 SP2)

User attempts to perform a merge but there is a pop up screen that I thought might just be the result of having the "confirm conversion at open" option checked in Tools, Options, General. However checking and unchecking makes no difference. I am beginning to think one of the converters or filters is corrupted or missing.

The initial external data source is an Excel file so I am puzzled by the difficulty of accurately reading the data, especially since 2 other users have no issue preforming the merge.

It seems that .xls files are not associated with Excel for this user - Word tries to interpret it as a text file.
    Let the user try this:
    - Open Windows Explorer.
    - Select Tools | Folder Options...
    - Activate the File Types tab.
    - Scroll down to the XLS extension.
    - Make sure that this is associated with Microsoft Excel.

Alternatively, the user can re-register Excel:
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice11Excel.exe" /regserver
    - Click OK or press Enter.

thanks for the quick response. The XLS file extension is associated correctly and double clicking Excel files gets the expected result of a file open.

The screen prior to the conversion popup shows that there is an SQL select being attempted. Any chance there is a glitch related to the SQL process or does the "conversion" popup indicate the issue is downstream of the SQL command?

In that case, I suspect that the user ticked "Show All" in the Confirm Data Source dialog (see below) and selected a text file option.
