USMT vs. Roaming Profiles (all)

Having had one of our PCs die a horrible death this week, and finding that reinstating the user on a replacement PC with all the customisations, settings, options, toolbars, etc etc, was the Work of the Devil, I feel the need to back up as many as possible of the Settings for users, so that they can be restored precisely in this eventuality.

It does not seem possible to run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard from the command line in a BATch file. (Does anyone know differently?)

I have come across the User State Migration Tool which on an initial reading seems to perform most of the functions of the GUI-based FAST wizard program. Has anyone used this, please?

Or should I just go ahead and implement Roaming Profiles (but will these save all settings for a user?).

    Thanks, as always.

When still at school and using a Win 2000 server, we had roaming profiles for our students and it seemed to present all their settings okay from any computer that they logged into the network with. My

Surely they didn't have computers already, when you were still at school?

I have been trying to avoid Roaming Profiles...

I SHOULD have said, "When I was still employed at our local school.............."!

AND No, there weren't computers available for me when I was a kid! AND I am NOT that old. But yes, roaming profiles worked fine for us!
