Booting from a hard drive in a different PC

I wonder whether anyone would like to comment on this situation.

I took a bootable hard drive from one PC (Mesh, UK-only) and put it into an old Dell Dimension (having first, of course removed its hard drive!).

It powered up OK, then about the time it would have started XP it blue screened and immediately restarted (so I couldn't see the STOP code). And repeated for as long as you left it powered up.

Is this because the hardware (motherboard, BIOS) of the two boxes was so different that this was a problem?

Someone suggested that it was because the Dell hardware was expecting to see the Dell-only partition at the front of the hard disk, but I think that is a load of rubbish...!

From past experience - in having completely formatted a drive - Dell's do not look for the hidden partition. I would suspect that it is a driver issue, or Dell have changed their modus operandi.

BTW - are the italics in your post simply punctuation, or could it be that you are you making a judgement?

You do not accept the italicising of one or more words as a valid emphasis mode, then?

You do not accept my comment as a valid attempt to see if you had been reading the news?

Re: Booting from a hard drive in a different PC

    John,

I can think of a number of specific differences which coud cause this.

The two systems require a different HAL (e.g. one is multiprocessor)

The two systems require different system disk drivers (e.g. one is IDE, the other is SCSI)

One of the systems supports ACPI and the other doesn't[/list]There are probably a number of other issues that could also have the same effect.

It might be worth trying to strip the system down to its most basic configuration, remove all cards and drives not required for booting. If it will boot like that you can search for DELL drivers and build it back up again.

    1) no multiprocessors! (You think we're made of money?!)
    2) a SCSI drive would not accept an ATA drive connector on its ribbon cable!
    3) Possibly. I don't know enough about that to offer an opinion. But it's the best suggestion yet...!

    Thanks

Ah, I follow you now! But the emphasis would have been on the wrong words...!

To show my ignorance, I sure don't follow the business about emphasis and the news? Anyone care to "point" the way to the explanation?

I used to have a system that had IDE disks on a controller that required a "SCSI driver" - it was some kind of motherboard RAID controller that pretended it was a SCSI controller to Windows but had IDE connectors, go figure!

    John,

Do you have an OS CD that you might be able to run a repair install or an inplace upgrade?

Yes, you're right - some odd devices got implemented by way of SCSI drivers -- but this is a bog-standard box...

I might be making this seem more important than it actually is!

I wanted to get the user data off the hard drive (who wasn't always saving their documents on the server, eh?!), so tried putting the drive in a Dell, but it wouldn't boot. I was just trying to see if anyone could explain to me why this didn't work!

What I haven't said (because it didn't seem necessary originally) was that I then put it into the only other machine of the same make, which is still in use (but may well go the same motherboard-frying way), and got the data off it onto a USB Flash Drive. So there is no problem with the original hard drive as such.
