Lock WInXp Work Station (XP Pro SP2)

We just installed WIndows 2003 Server Standard and have Windows XP Professional on all of the work stations. Is there a way to force the work station to lock if left idle for a certain amount of time. Can we define this in group policy? I found a way to make a shortcut that will lock the work station. And then created a scheduled task that will run the shortcut when computer is left idle for x amount of time. But this doesn't seem to be doing the job.

    Thanks in advance

you will find the settings you need to set in

    <code>Group Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Display > </code>

    Set the following values

    <table border=1><td>Screen Saver Executable Name</td><td>scrnsave.scr </td><td>Screen Saver</td><td>Enabled</td><td>Screen Saver Timeout</td><td>a reasonable number of seconds</td><td>Password protect the screen saver</td><td>Enabled</td></table>

I'm sorry, I do not want the screen saver to come up, I want the computer to lock...It just seems my computer does not recognize being idle. Because I have a scheduled task (the task runs a shortcut to lock the computer) that is supposed to run 1 minute after being idle. But it never seems to happen, I read somewhere that XP machines will not ever go idle when they are part of a domain. Is there a way to force the machine to go idle?

Sorry, I thought a password protected screen saver would do the job, I don't know how to get the PC to lock when it is idle. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

Presumably what you found on "locking when idle" is this article? What do you call 'idle' anyway?

I'm not clear why you don't want to use one of the more benign and minimally-resource-intensive screensavers to do the locking. We found to our horror, o so many years ago, that something like the 3D Pipes one could take over 50% of the CPU (this is a long time ago) when it cut in -- not a good idea for a server! So we used something simple which caused no problems whatever, to the extent that I've forgotten which one it actually was! Probably "Blank"...

Consider to use ENERGY STAR's free EZ GPO tool:

EZ GPO tool allows a network administrator to centrally control power management settings using Group Policy Objects.

I have a different problem. When I press CTRL+ALT+DEL I get the task manager while I need that screen that allows you to lock down the PC with a password.

The screen says something like: This computer is locked by Wassim and he is the only one who can unlock it.

How do I reassign CTRL+ATL+DEL to invoke the lock screen vs the Task manager, though I may need to use the Task Manager every so often? I guess I will have to get it from the right-click on the Taskbar.

    Thanks for any help.
