How to search local drives only (XP Pro SP2)

If I search for files and folders, and specify "Local drives (C:,D: )", XP also searches on the network drives, which takes a long, long, time.

a) Is this normal, expected behaviour?
How can I get XP to search where I want it to search?

Grateful for any pointers,

Re: How to search local drives only (XP Pro SP2)

Mine doesn't do that, Klaus. I have an internal hard drive (C and an external USB hard drive (E and that's all it searches, not network places. Are you talking about MAPPED network drives? I don't really know how XP handles those, so I'm gonna go do a test now. I have a universal stick reader that has three drive letters and a CD/DVD drive, obviously with a drive letter. XP is 'smart' enough not to try searching those. My search parameter says "local HARD drives" so it seems smart enough in that respect. I'll be back. Meanwhile, anyone else know the answer?

Well, I struck out on my test, Klaus. I mapped a couple of network shares as drive letters on the local machine but as long as I choose the Local Hard Drives, it doesn't touch the mapped drive letters. I've played around in preferences and options and haven't stumbled on the setting that you might have that's causing it.

I am wondering if you have anything on your local drives that links to the network drives? When you click the search subfolders in advanced options will that force the search to continue to the network drives? I don't have any way to check this wild theory!

Now that Skitterbug has said what she did, I wonder about this one, which I take so for granted that I don't think about it anymore???

I haven't set up that machine myself... It seems that "My Documents" is on the server, and that's what gets searched even when I specify "local disks" only.

Hi Al,

"Automatically search for network folders and printers" was checked, but when turned off, it doesn't seem to make a difference.
