Saving file with graphics (Word 2000)

I am having problems saving a file with alot of graphics in it - some are equations others are graphics. Fast saves is off, the properties, summary picture preview is off - any other suggestions? I have read through the posts but didn't really find anything - of course it is Monday and I am getting old...

    thanks

    Hi Melanie,
Can you expand on the specific problems you are having?

Also, what SR's/SP's do you have installed, what OS are you using, and are you stand-alone or network?

Re: Saving file with graphics (Word 2000)

Windows 98 - word2000 sr1(Actually it says word2000 9.0.2720). I am helping a math professor with some of his papers. He says he imported the graphics from a program called Mathmatica. When you try to save the file, it can take over 5 minutes. He also said in the middle of working on it - it automatically starts saving and then sometimes hangs up.

    Thanks.

The graphics being imported may be huge, explaining the save time. The fact that it seems to be saving on its own tells me that AutoSave is enabled - if so, you will need to turn it off to stop that behavior.

Is this the same as "save autorecover information" every 10 minutes?

Yes - track changes is turned off. I did notice that someof the graphics when you click on them one time brings up the picture toolbar and others do not - what is the difference? Some have the frames and some do not.

Re: Saving file with graphics (Word 2000)

The professor is having problems saving - it just takes a very long time - he said up to 4-5 minutes. The document is loaded with small graphics - kind of like an exam - pictures of a graph or chart or equation (not done with the equation editor though) then an explanation or question related to the graph. He has two files open in word and he is cutting and pasting from one to the other. Yesterday I turned off fast saves, background saves, automatic save every 10 minutes - I did check and track changes was disabled as well as the file, properties, summary, save preview option.

He has Windows 98 OS, and Word is installed on his hard drive.

Re: Saving file with graphics (Word 2000)

Er...kinda sorta. AutoSave was the option in Word 95; AutoRecover for Word 97 and beyond. I would think that the effect on the hard drive would be the same, in that the file would be written periodically.

Not that it is an excuse, but I have Word 95 at my desk; Word 97 at our scanner (and at home); and, I am on our Office 2000 implementation team, so I have been converting Word 95 form templates to Word 2000. I go back and forth a lot. Sorry for the confusion... <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    Hi Melanie,

Even though Fast Saves have been disabled, it's possible that the file is still bloated. Use File/Save As to save the file and see if that helps.

Personally I would copy/paste all to a new document and start fresh.

Also, how large are the graphics? I know you said they were small visually, but how large are they in file size? If each graphic is relatively large and is resized in Word the file size does not change. You should be able to right-click an image, select Format Picture, and on the Size tab click the Reset command to find out.

If this is the case, you/he would need to resize the image in a graphics editor prior to inserting them in the document.

Re: Saving file with graphics (Word 2000)

I went through the steps you suggested on trying to find the file size - when I click on reset - it just puts it back to 100%? So I am not exactly sure how big they are. thanks
