What am I missing?

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Waggers on 02-May-06 12:45. Forgot to include the link! [doh])</P>Sorry to post another one of those incredibly annoying "here's my website, please debug it" posts, but here goes...

When I view the following page (in Firefox), there are two problems that I can't seem to remedy:
(1) There's an underline to the right of the WagWeb logo at the top. I've checked and there are no spaces in the code within the <a> tags, so I'm baffled as to why this is appearing.
(2) The menu (which is css-based, not javascript) overlaps the main text and has a gap to it's left, yet I can't seem to shift it to the left.

If you can spot anything obvious that I'm doing wrong, please let me know. Meantime I will of course keep trying to fix it myself.

I don't know enough to know why, but changing

<code>
</a></code>

to

<code></a></code>

seems to resolve #1

Re: What am I missing?

The only other comment I can make is that I am being forced to view it full screen to prevent the horizontal scroll bar cutting in on my 1024 x 768 screen.
(I HATE that on websites <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> )

Is it possible you are over-specifying(?) the width of the centre column or something?

Re: What am I missing?

Actually I think it's the header that's too wide (but it could be the centre column instead/as well). I'll certainly fix that before applying the layout to the site for real, as it's one of my pet hates too!

Hi Waggers

#2 is because the menu is created using a list. Although you have correctly hidden the bullets you have to move the text left using indent...just adapt you css to fit this post <post:=555,939>post 555,939</post:>...the long going Jon Rick problem <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

or

ul.menu li {
margin-bottom: 1px;
float: left;
position: relative;
text-indent: -25px;
list-style-type: none;
}

adjust text-indent to fit you specific needs

Re: What am I missing?

I found that text-indent moved the text, but not the coloured block around it. However, left-margin did the job perfectly.

<img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15> Lists are my favourites for making all types of menus, secondary and primary navbars and work wonders when used with css.

Re: What am I missing?

Thanks for the encouragement, Jezza. My plan (as you've probably noticed) is to introduce a bit of a blog, so hopefully it will be a bit more interesting (and updated more often). The "new look" has a number of advantages - as you've spotted, I'm replacing the javascript menu with an html/css list-based one. Also I'm using a lot more in the way of SSI, which will hopefully make updating things a bit easier.

My host doesn't allow any server-side scripting but SSI (and some .htaccess functionality) seems to be ok. As a result there will still be some client-side scripts involved, but hopefully only simple stuff that every javascript enabled browser should interpret the same way.

I'm thinking of changing the central (main content) bit of the page to an iframe - what do you think? Apart from that, I think the new look is pretty much ready to roll out, so I'll get started shortly.

Yep, it's a plan...I like plans as it gives you direction...low maintenance always a good option. I am writing all my bits as I go and then adding them as I go. You are now on my useful links page so that I can monitor developments. In a way I am glad you have got rid of the floating menu. They have there purpose for the right site. As you are revamping, you are right, it may not fit in with the new look and when you do want to make changes a pain.....[*].. is the way forward...I shall watch but make sure Ringo and the gang are still somewhere <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Re: What am I missing?

Well thanks for my morning workout[gggrrrrr] <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

There are lots of reason which I can't work out why, just FF being very efficient and IE being a crock. I think I may have given you the wrong advive before, a case of <img src=/S/rtfm.gif border=0 alt=rtfm width=24 height=23>...sorry.

Get rid of margin-left: -25px;

to read

ul.menu {
list-style: none;
width: 125px;
}

Then change

#leftcol{
width:150px;
vertical-align: top;
padding-right: 15px;
}

I am really concerned about why it is doing this but I have a suspicion, and just a suspicion( haven't got time to investigate at the moment that it has something to do with the mix of CSS and the use of tables... I shall play with this over the week end.

Re: What am I missing?

Well, I've managed to fix that now. The menu is still aligned slightly differently in IE and Firefox, but the text stays in the blocks and the blocks stay on the page now.

It's interesting that a popular argument in favour of CSS as opposed to javascript is that some browsers interpret javascripts in different ways. I've had far more problems along this line with CSS than I ever had with the javascript menu I'm replacing! But the CSS one is much easier to maintain, and is probably quicker to load.
