Sections and footers (Word 2000 sp3)

I need some advice on the use of sections and footers. I can have a document set up as shown in Sample1.doc, which has sections starting on an odd page and different header and footer for the first page of each section. The document is printed double sided so that the title page in each section always has the next page of text on its reverse side and if there is a third page to the section it does NOT have the title page of the next section on its reverse side. Print Preview (25%) of Sample1.doc shows that there is no page 4.

The footers appear on each subsequent page of a section, however, I want the footer to only appear on the last page of each section. The footer for each section is the same.

I can get the footer to appear on the last page of each section by restarting the page numbering for each section at 1 and using the IF field to compare the page number and sectionpages. However, when I do this I loose the necessary formatting regarding printing correctly for double sided printing.

Is there a way that I can have both my required formatting and the section footer appearing only on the last page of each section? The number of pages in each section is not consistent. There is a minimum of two pages but could be three to four pages. The number of sections in a document will also vary.

See the attached version. I inserted SEQ fields at the beginning of each section as suggested in MSKB article Create two page-numbering schemes in a single document in Word 2000. The IF field in the page footer tests one of these fields against the page number to see if the footer text should be displayed.

Thanks Hans thats what I need.
One more question, I add new sections using code that is attached to a button on the a tool bar. How do I add the nested SEQ fields at the start of the section using code?

    Thanks

I would make the section break plus the following fields into an AutoText entry in your template. You can assign this entry to a toolbar button.

    Thanks again Hans
    I now have my template working correctly. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>
I have not used the SEQ field before and have been experimenting with them and page numbering, what I would like to do (if possible and without too much work) is have the pages in each section numbered 1 to n, (not including the first page of each section which is a title page, no header or footer). However this may not be possible because each section starts on an odd page which means a section with 3 pages has actually 4 pages according to the SectionPages field. Also the page numbering cannot be restarted at 1 for each section as it mucks up my double sided printing layout.

Am I correct or is there a 'not too difficult' way to achieve the page numbering that I desire?

    Thanks

The attached version does part of what you want. You may not like the result in the second section: the first page of that section is visible in print and print preview only, but it counts in SectionPages anyway, so Word considers that section to have 3 pages. I don't know how to exclude the extra page from the page count.

    Thanks Hans

The page numbering solution a lot better than I could get and it will do.
