Sum cells that includes text (2003)

Can it be done? I've attached an example of what I need - want to add, for example, the total number of hours of S someone took in any given payperiod.

    Thanks - again.

It would be much easier if you could use separate cells for the hours and for the codes. Would that be possible at all?

I know it would - and it would be for me and a few others - however . . .

This is for sharing with all of the 500 secretaries who work her and, sadly, 99% of them have very limited knowledge of Excel - and no where to turn if they have a problem.

    Soooooooooooooo??????

    What do you think?

It seems more complicated to me to have to enter a number and a code into the same cell than to enter them in separate cells, whether you are experienced in Excel or not. You could use Data Validation, for example, to provide a dropdown list of valid codes in the cells intended for codes. So what is the objection to using separate cells?

That's because you're smart and you know Excel - the big problem will arise when someone has to insert, say, 50 new rows and know how to copy the formulas so they reference the new rows - I'm not kidding you when I tell you their knowledge of Excel is pretty much type and press enter - if something "weird" happens, they're lost.

That's okay - it was just a thought so they wouldn't have to transfer all this data, using pen and paper, so they can keep track of the total number of hours each person uses, by code.

It seems to me that you have to have some skill in Excel to be able to enter codes and numbers in one cell, and to format part of the contents as redunder certain conditions etc. If you used separate cells, it could all be automatic. But who am I? <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Anyway, perhaps you can use the formulas as in the attached version.

YOU are one of the people to whom I turn in times of Excel, Word, etc. need!

The preparers of these forms currently DO NOT put the hours and the codes in one cell - they don't even use Excel to put the hours or the codes in- they print the darn thing and then put the stuff in with a pen.

This is what we both get for trying to be helpful - sorry - shouldn't even have started this conversation.

    Sigh . . .
