    Slow CD/DVD drive

On my system the DVD drive seems slow. It never seems to fully spin up, but it looks like it reads in short bursts (spin up a little; read and directly spin down). I never get errors (also doesn't seem as if I heard read-retries) or read problems however so it does all work.

The odd thing is that if I boot into another WinXP I have loaded (my system is dual boot); I get exactly the same...

My guess is that if could be caused by software but as the two systems are quite different (in almost all software), I expect this is a hardware setting. Aren't things like spin-up and spin-down times kept in the drive settings somehow / somewhere. Don't know; having a util that could read these would already be helpful... I played with Nero's diskspeed I recall that didn't help too much...

Anyone with experience in this? Any clues as to what could be causing this?

Take a look at this site regarding CD & DVDs. Down near the bottom of the page are some hints as to why DVDs are slow and how to correct the problems mentioned in the article.

    Today it is called golf!

    Re: Slow CD/DVD drive

Searching around, I found this CD-ROM Tool by Naiobrin Software. Once again, I've not used it so I can't vouch for it.
