What the heck is THIS? (XP Pro-SP-2)

If I create a folder, say, on my desktop, all os fine. I can put stuff in it, right-click it, etc., without issue.

    BUT

If I move that same folder to my Start Menu, (or create it there to start with), I can just point and it shows anything in it in a "dropdown-scroll" menu. If I right-click it, I can look at the "Properties, but, if I try to open it from the context menu, I get the error below.

I tried running a reg cleaner (jv16)... I even tried starting over last night.

What the heck is causing this?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

Do you think it is feasible that a file should contain as many as 28,916 icons?
It sounds like "an error" to me, but I have no idea why it should be happening!

    John:

I don't (necessarily) mind the *why*... I just have real issue with the not going away part.

Registry scans didn't work. Repair using the XP install CD didn't work.

So now, short of starting over, what the heck else can I do?

AND, since THAT'S what happened a couple days ago, (and I had figured that I just did something too fast and screwed things up, so I started over then as well), how the HECK do I make sure it doesn't happen again!?

What happens when you do this same operation but within the application "Windows Explorer"? I can move my "Aetna" folder from the desktop to
SkitterbugStart MenuPrograms and the Aetna folder appears at the bottom of the my program start list and it will open without any problems.

The icon is still all screwed up, nit it'll open without error in Explorer.

I guess if this were happening to me, I'd use TweakUI.exe's repair option to rebuild Icons to see if it helped. I don't believe doing this will hurt your computer but I guess with all changes to the computer's system, a good back up should be made. I have another program called XP Smoker that I use, but it isn't free. There is an option in it for clearing the Icon Cache on it's miscellaneous page. Hopefully you'll find a solution or someone will come up with a better suggestion to help. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

Are you running some type of desktop theme ??? The "theme.icl" in the error indicates an icon library (.icl) related to a theme. See if you can follow the file path back in Windows Explorer.

    Skitterbug / Doc:

Following the path as you pointed out Doc, showed me the cukprit... removing the problem didn't bring on the solution. But TweakUI's 'Rebuild' did.

    Thanks to you both.
