    Intermittent quote problem (Firefox 1.5.0.3)

Occasionally when I am typing a post and I press the single-quote key ' then suddenly the Find box opens at the bottom left of the Firefox browser window, and any following text is typed there. The only way out is to close Firefox and open it again.

Has anyone else come across this comparatively minor annoyance?

    Hi John,

I attempted this just now, and from what I've seen, it only occurs if I'm not in a text entry box.

When I leave the keyboard alone (ie not typing), the find box went away by itself after approximately 15 seconds.

Check out type-ahead - I suspect it has also to do with the option below...

Unfortunately, my accessibility.typeaheadfind option is already set to false, and my options look just like you show.

Can't say it's ever happened to me. One possible (admittedly fairly annoying) workaround is to use ' instread of ' in your posts to give the desired result.

A workaround that I have seen elsewhere for this is to change a setting in about:config
Change accessibility.typeaheadfind.timeout to 1 (default value is 5000)

    Thanks, Tony.

I will try that, but as I say, it occurs but rarely!

Re: Intermittent quote problem (Firefox 1.5.0.3)

As a sidebar, when I use the Extesion Syncmarks to replicate all my firefox bookmarks into the IE Favorites folder it translates all single quotes as & # 39 (without the spaces). Also when I attempted to write this post in Firefox then Opera 9 beta & # 39 (without the spaces) was changed to single quotes when I hit preview. I am writing this in IE, but it does the same thing so I had to put a space between the &, #, 3 and 9. I looks like I hit the trifecta.

&# followed by a decimal number and % followed by a hexadecimal number are "official" ways of specifying a character in HTML (hence John Gray's remark higher up in this thread). You can type the codes in the compose/edit box, but when you click Preview or Post It, HTML renders the codes as the corresponding characters, so for example &# 65 and % 41 (without spaces) both become A, since decimal 65 = hexadecimal 41 is the ANSI code for capital A.
