how to replace HD in Compaq Presario 2700 laptop

I have a Compaq Presario 2700 laptop - the hard drive is making clicking noises that sound like read/write head problems. I would like to replace the hard drive but have never worked on the insides of a laptop. I have done a lot of work on desktop computers - replacing all types of components and boards. What do I need to research and find out about replacing the hard drive? Are all laptop hard drives "generic"? Is this very difficult or should I be able to do this? Thanks.

OK - I finally was helped by a support tech at HP/Compaq and now have the Hardware Manual (PDF) for my laptop. Removing and replacing the hard drive does not appear to be that difficult. Now my question is about the replacement hard drive? Are they generic? Can I purchase any 2.5 hard drive and be comfortable that it will work in the Presario?

I'm not 100% on this but I think I would stick to a Compaq drive that I KNOW would be mechanically proper for that particular laptop.
You should have asked the HP tech that question when you had the chance. Call them back.

thanks Bob but I did not call tech support. Did an email inquiry which they responded to. Compaq does not have the drive available according to their online parts store. Don't know if a drive for a different Compaq laptop would work or not.

You didn't say what exact model 2700 you have but check this site for Compaq parts, including HDs.
