    Outlook integration (2002)

    Hello All,
I have a need to integrate outlook messages somehow into my DB. What I want to do is to place the emails in some common folder (or maybe an exchange folder?) and make a link to that message inside the db record. So, I won't actually be putting the message in the db, only creating a link to it. The other cool thing would be to display the message as text inside a form. This will allow tracking of that information along with the info the person is entering on a record. Currently, the users cut and paste text from messages into the db in a memo field. This doesn't always work and sometimes causes a record corruption.

Has anyone heard of doing such a thing in Access?

    Thanks,
    Mark

You can use File | Get External Data | Link Tables... to create a link to an Outlook folder in Access. Select Outlook() or Exchange() in the Files of Type dropdown. A wizard will lead you through the necessary steps.

Thanks, I will give this a try. This sounds like it will link a folder. Is there anyway of linking right to a message?

    Thanks,
    Mark

The result of linking to a folder will be that the folder looks like a table in Access, with the messages in that folder as records and the parts of the message (subject, body, recipient, date etc.) as fields. I don't think there is a way to link to an individual mail message.

    Re: Outlook integration (2002)

Thanks so much Hans. Can you imagine a way that would allow me to selectively pull in the information from a message without having to link the message and store it in exchange or use cut and paste? This would do the same thing without the problems of cutting and pasting.

    Thanks,
    Mark

You could use Automation to run Outlook VBA within Access. See Automation 101 on WendellB's website for general info about Automation, and search this forum for Outlook.Application, you'll find examples of automating Outlook from Access.
